Chavez announced today that San Juan National Historic Site will launch the "Every Kid in a Park Initiative" Thursday, September 24, 2015, with the visit of 3 of its neighboring schools, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Brumbaugh, and Colegio San Agustin. Approximately 40, 4th graders will be transported to Castillo San Felipe del Morro and learn about the history of the fortifications. As previously announced, San Juan NHS has embarked on an ambitious goal of bringing every 4th grader on the island to this National Park to support the initiative announced by President Obama, which was created to invite every 4th grader in the nation to experience and connect with the great outdoors and be inspired to become future stewards. We are very excited about the launching of this program and we are honored that the Puerto Rico Department of Education will be joining us as a partner in this effort. A highlight of Thursday's activities will be the signing of a collaborative agreement between San Juan NHS and the Department of Education. "We are thrilled that Secretary Rafael Román Melendez will be joining us to sign our agreement and help launch this effort" said Superintendent Chavez. Secretary Román and Superintendent Chavez will conduct a brief signing ceremony at 9:00 am as part of the ceremony to establish their partnership. "Throughout this collaborative agreement with San Juan National Historic Site our 4th graders will be able to visit, explore and learn more about two of the most important structures in Puerto-Rican history.With this agreement we fulfil our objectives of offering to each one of our children, a diverse of opportunities that contribute to their holistic development, broaden their knowledge and above all to learn the importance, love and of significance of our historic resources" added Secretary Rafael Román Meléndez.
"With this special collaboration with the Puerto Rico Department of Education, we will be able to reach so many more kids and will help us achieve our goal of bringing every 4th grader to the park", concluded Superintendent Chavez.
The "Every Kid in a Park" initiative's goal is to invite all 4th graders and 10 years old "homeschoolers" in the nation to experience connecting with the great outdoors and be inspired to become future stewards of our national treasures.Since it is our goal to bring all 4th graders in the island to visits their National Park we are providing them with an incentive.Kids can visit the website www.everykidinapark.com and complete an educational activity to have access to a voucher that will allow the student and 3 guests to enter the fortifications at no cost (one of the guest must be 18 years old or older).During the child visit to the park the voucher can be exchange for an open pass that expires august, 2016.This pass is valid for the park and over 2,000 recreational areas and other National Parks across the nation.Kids with their teachers or leaders will complete the activity found at www.everykidinapark.com print out their paper voucher and bring it to San Juan NHS where they can exchange it for the pass.
This effort is an ambitious one and will require support from many different partners and stakeholders. Kids coming from outside the metropolitan area will require not only transportation, but also food or snacks and possibly lodging. San Juan National Historic Site will be working with its partners and others to secure the funds for this project. Entrance to San Juan National Historic Site is $5.00 for visitors over 15 years and younger are free with a paid adult and is open from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm except on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.

San Juan National Historic Site lanza la iniciativa "Todos los niños al parque" San Juan, Puerto Rico- Superintendente Walter J. Chávez, anunció hoy que el San Juan National Historic Site pondrá en marcha la iniciativa "Todos los niños al parque" el jueves 24 de septiembre de 2015, con la visita de tres de sus escuelas vecinas, Escuela Abraham Lincoln, Escuela Martín Brumbaugh, y el Colegio San Agustín. Aproximadamente 40 estudiantes de 4to grado serán transportados al Castillo San Felipe del Morro y aprenderán sobre la historia de las fortificaciones. Como se anunció previamente, San Juan NHS ha lanzado este ambicioso proyecto de traer a cada estudiante de cuarto grado de toda la isla a este, su parque nacional para apoyar la iniciativa anunciada por el presidente Obama.Esta iniciativa fue creada para invitar a cada estudiante de cuarto grado de la nación y brindarles la oportunidad de ponerse en contacto con áreas verdes, estar al aire libre y que esto les ayude a servir de inspiración para convertirse en administradores futuros. Estamos muy entusiasmados con el lanzamiento de este programa y nos sentimos honrados de que el Departamento de Educación de Puerto Rico se una a nosotros como aliado en este esfuerzo. Algo que queremos destacar es que el jueves se firmaráun acuerdo de colaboración entre el San Juan NHS y el Departamento de Educación de Puerto Rico. "Estamos encantados de que el secretario Rafael Román Meléndez se una a nosotros para firmar nuestro acuerdo que ayudará a dar comienzo a este esfuerzo", dijo el superintendente Chávez.El Secretario Román Meléndez y el Superintendente Chávez llevarán a cabo una breve ceremonia de firma a las 9:00 am en el marco de la ceremonia de establecer su colaboración. "A través de este acuerdo colaborativo con el San Juan National Historic Site, nuestros estudiantes de cuarto grado podrán visitar, explorar y conocer más sobre dos de las edificaciones más importantes de nuestra historia como pueblo. Con este acuerdo cumplimos nuestros objetivos de ofrecerle, a cada uno de nuestros niños, diversas oportunidades que contribuyan a su desarrollo holístico, que potencien la construcción de nuevos saberes y, sobre todo, que sirvan para enseñarles la importancia, el amor y la valorización de estos recursos históricos". "Esta colaboración especial con el Departamento de Educación de Puerto Rico nos ayudará a llegar a muchos más niños y niñas paraalcanzar nuestro objetivo de llevar a cada estudiante de cuarto grado al parque", concluyó el Superintendente Chávez. El propósito de la iniciativa "Todos los niños al parque", es traer a todos los estudiantes de 4to gradoy los "homeschoolers" de 10 años en la nación a disfrutar de las áreas al aire libre, la naturalezapara que esto los inspire convertirse en embajadores y protectores de nuestros tesoros nacionales. Como incentivo adicional los niños pueden visitar el sitio webwww.everykidinapark.comy completar una actividad educativa para tener acceso a un pase que le permitirá al estudiante y a tres acompañantes disfrutar de las fortificaciones sin costo alguno (uno de estos acompañantes debe tener al menos 18 años) hasta agosto del 2016.Los niños con sus maestros o líderes pueden completar la actividad en la páginawww.everykidinapark.com imprimir su boleto de papel y traerlo al San Juan National Historic Site, donde podrá ser cambiado por el pase.Este pase es válido para aproximadamente 2,000 zonas de recreo y otros parques nacionales en toda la nación. Este esfuerzo es ambicioso y requerirá el apoyo de muchos colaboradores. Los niños que vienen de fuera del área metropolitana requerirán no sólo la transportación, sino también alimentos o meriendas y posiblemente alojamiento. San Juan National Historic Site estará trabajando con sus colaboradores para asegurar los fondos para poder costear este proyecto.
