Superintendent Walter J Chavez announced the annual San Juan National Historic Site spring clean up activity to be held on Saturday, May 15 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  The cleanup will take place on the Paseo del Morro trail, starting at the San Juan Gate to the entrance of the San Juan Bay.  Maintaining this seashore trail contributes to caring for our environment as well as safeguarding our historical resources.

Volunteers should meet at 8:45AM at the San Juan Gate for grouping in teams and to pick up cleaning equipment.  Participants are asked to wear appropriate clothing for the warm weather.  It is also suggested to bring water and snacks.  Volunteers will be given the opportunity to visit the fortifications free of charge after participating in the activity.  Children are invited to stay after the clean up to participate in the park’s Junior Ranger program which teaches environmental ethics and local history through fun activities.  Upon completion, children are presented with their own Junior Ranger badge.

“Again this year, we are asking our neighbors and friends to come out and pitch in to help maintain their National Park. This will also give them the opportunity to visit this beautiful and enjoyable recreational trail,” says Superintendent Chavez.  The Paseo del Morro is open everyday, is 1.5 miles round trip, and has interpretive waysides for visitors to learn about the history of the walls and the fort.  The trail is expected to soon be extended from its present ending at the end of the San Juan Bay to a trail along side the Northern walls of El Morro for providing additional access to the fort.

All interested volunteers, community groups or sponsors please call 787-729-6777 during working hours for signing up or getting additional information on the clean up.

San Juan National Historic Site is comprised of Castillo San Felipe del Morro, Castillo San Cristóbal, Fort San Juan de La Cruz (El Cañuelo), the San Juan Gate, and most of the City Wall. The site is open everyday from 9:00AM to 6:00PM, except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Day.  Admission to San Juan NHS is $3 for adults for one fortification and $5 for both; free for those 15 and under.
