| This coat of arms, which hangs above the entryway to El Morro, is that of Charles III, who was king of Spain when the San Juan forts were being completed in the last half of the 18th century. The Spanish government presented it to San Juan National Historic site in 1964. |

BEGIN HERE - The main access to El Morro is this bridge across the dry moat. Long ago, it had a drawbridge mechanism installed next to the doors. Above the entrance notice the elaborate royal coat of arms of the kings of Spain, a reminder that this fortress was built by the most powerful empire of its time.
