  • Park on Winter Schedule

    The American Camp Visitor Center is closed Thanksgiving Day, re-opening Friday. Winter hours: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Wednesday-Sunday. The English Camp Visitor Center is closed for the winter. Grounds at both units are open from dawn to 11 p.m. daily. More »

Tall Oregon Grape

Tall Oregon grape
(Berteris nervosa)

This evergreen shrub has thin, shiny leaves and can grow to five feet or more. Leaves turn a rich scarlet along the edges. Used by Indians for yellow dye, flowers, and innerbark, but not edible.

Where in the Park: Many places, but most noticeably along the Visitor Center porch at American Camp.

Mt. Finlayson on San Juan Island.

Mt. Finlayson is named for Roderick Finlayson, a Hudson's Bay Company employee who is credited with founding Victoria, BC. He is one of several Company men who have island roads and features named for them.
