National Park Week at Sagamore Hill National Historic Site

Sagamore Hill will be hosting a series of family activities and ranger programs for National Park Week from Saturday, April 21 through Sunday, April 29. Participation in these activities and programs are FREE. These activities include a new junior ranger program, a new ranger guided walk in Oyster Bay, a performance by folk singer Johnny Cuomo, a presentation on National Parks by First Light Photography, and an appearance by Theodore Roosevelt as portrayed by James Foote. In addition, we will be offering a series of special programs about the history of the National Park Service on April 21, 22, 28 & 29.


Saturday, April 21

9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

 

In recognition of Junior Ranger Day Sagamore Hill will be launching its newest addition to the Junior Ranger program, the Bunny Ranger, geared toward children ages 4-7.


Sunday, April 22 & April 29

3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.


Sagamore Hill will also be launching its newest ranger guided program on National Park Week, the Funeral of Theodore Roosevelt, on Sunday, April 22 & April 29 at 3:00 PM. Join ranger Howard Ehrlich at Christ Episcopal Church parking lot located between the church and the Oyster Bay Public Library. Tour participants will have an opportunity to view the interior of Christ Episcopal Church where Roosevelt worshipped regularly, and where his funeral was held. Following ranger Ehrlich's talk at Christ Church, the group will have to transport themselves to the parking lot of Young's Memorial Cemetery where the program will reconvene. Tour participants will also have the opportunity to view the final resting place of Theodore and Edith Roosevelt along with a couple of his children. The program is expected to last approximately one hour. This program is rain or shine.


Sunday, April 22

2 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. & 3:00 p.m. to 3:45 p.m.


Solo guitarist Johnny Cuomo will perform 45 minute sets that will include folk songs and share a series of stories the whole family will enjoy. Johnny will introduce children to stories from around the world, as well as traditional American, Native American folk tales, and the Teddy Bear story. Using his skills on guitar, banjo, Irish flute, penny whistle, Indian flute, mandolin and harmonica, Johnny magically unfolds these tales, set to music, to bring a unique cultural and musical experience to the students.Johnny Cuomo has been a working musician for over 15 years, playing, writing and performing folk, rock and Irish music. Rain date for Johnny Cuomo will be Sunday, July 1, 2012


There will also be a very special Earth Day appearance by Theodore Roosevelt as portrayed by James Foote. Mr. Roosevelt will be available from 11 am-4 pm. Rain date for the Theodore Roosevelt appearance will be Sunday, April 29, 2012

Photographers/Adventurers Gen Benjamin and Bill Rudock from First Light Photography will provide presentation that highlights 6-10 National Parks along with the park history, how to get there, best times and places for photography.
