The National Park Service (NPS) will launch several initiatives in 2009 on the Stillwater Islands section of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway (Riverway).  To present them, the NPS is hosting an information session on Thursday, April 30, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the Stillwater City Hall.

Effective Saturday, April 18, 2009, the St. Croix River Visitor Center of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., seven days a week.

New Superintendent Chris Stein
Christopher (Chris) Stein has been selected as the new Superintendent for Saint Croix National Scenic Riverway, St. Croix Falls, Wis.  Currently the Chief of Interpretation and Education at Yosemite National Park, Calif., he will begin the new assignment October 19.

Riverway Receives Centennial Funding
Efforts to protect water quality in the St. Croix River Basin got a boost this week, with the announcement that the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway is one of 76 national parks to receive funding through a new cost-share initiative, the Centennial Challenge. The Riverway is receiving $200,000,  which will be matched with funding from the Twin Cities Metropolitan Council and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, to develop a watershed model that will help achieve nutrient reduction goals for the St. Croix River.

New St Croix River Camping Regulations to Take Effect in 2008
The National Park Service has selected Alternative 3a of the Lower River Camping Plan to implement in 2008 north of the High Bridge.  Elements of 3a will also be implemented between the High Bridge and Stillwater.

The regulations adopted by the Park Superintendent to apply specifically to St. Croix National Scenic Riverway have been issued for 2007 and will go into effect May 20, 2007.

Did You Know?
A new species of dragonfly, the St. Croix Snaketail, was discovered within St. Croix NSR in 1989. It has only been found to reproduce in one other river in Wisconsin. It prefers large streams with fast flow and clean water, abundant cobble and gravel with sand bottoms in forested watersheds.
