The year-long celebration of Rocky Mountain National Park's 100th Anniversary continues as we head into May. Join us for one of these fun events! May 1: Wild Inspirations Art and artists throughout American history have found inspiration in wild places and played important roles in informing the public about the wonders of public lands. Come join local artists and hear how Rocky Mountain National Park inspires their art. Enjoy appetizers, drinks, and live music! A percentage of sales will go to benefit the park. 5 to 8 p.m. Aspen and Evergreen Gallery, Estes Park. May 18: Pioneers of the Peaks: Local Climbers Who Made History The Art of Mountaineering presented by Jim Disney. For several decades, a small group of men and women made history exploring and ascending the summits surrounding the Estes Valley. In 2013 and 2014, the Estes Park Museum and the Estes Valley Library gathered their inspiring stories. Join us at the Estes Park Museum at 7 p.m. for this inspiring speaker. May 19: Enos Mills and the Campaign for Rocky Mountain National Park On January 26, 1915, after a hard-fought seven year campaign, President Woodrow Wilson signed the bill creating Rocky Mountain National Park. At the center of it all was Enos A. Mills, the "Father of Rocky Mountain National Park." At 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. at History Colorado in Denver, Historian Jim Pickering delves into the history of this Colorado icon and tourist magnet as we celebrate its Centennial. Tickets can be purchased on line at historycolorado.org. May 20: Spectacular High AltitudeTrail Ridge Road Bicycle Ride This ride is contingent upon Trail Ridge Road being closed to motor vehicle traffic at this time. Experience the wonder of riding this spectacular road before it is open to cars. The ride will start at noon and there will be two turn-around points: Rock Cut and Alpine Visitor Center. May 29-31: Estes Park Western Heritage Art and Artisan Show and Sale Come see the best in Western art at the Estes Park Events Complex (Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.)! The Windows to the West will showcase the beauty of the mountain scenery and wildlife that is found in Rocky Mountain National Park and the surrounding area. The Western Artisan Show will celebrate traditional cowboy arts, tack, and tools that have been used since the park was first founded in 1915. Many pieces from the park's Artist-in-Residence collection will be exhibited, and several pieces will be available for purchase. Admission is $5. May 30: Centennial Speaker Series: Dr. Jill Baron, "Stories from Loch Vale" Dr. Jill Baron is an ecosystem ecologist with the U.S. Geological Survey, and a Senior Research Ecologist with the Natural Resource Ecology Laboratory at Colorado State University. As Rocky Mountain National Park celebrates its first 100 years, Dr. Baron will address the importance of long-term ecosystem science in understanding the natural dynamics of mountain catchments, the effects of human activities, and how scientific knowledge will be essential to protecting mountain ecosystems for the next 100 years. Join us at 7:30 pm in the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center. Doors open at 7 p.m. There are also special on-going events that celebrate Rocky's Centennial year. We Love Rocky Mountain National Park (through September 4) This special Centennial exhibit at History Colorado explores the many ways that people have connected with the landscape of Rocky Mountain National Park over time. Come see how your experiences fit into history of people in the park! Kauffman House Museum Centennial Exhibit (May 23 –September 4) This exhibit highlights the history of the development of the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park and the related changes in Grand Lake. Come browse historic narratives, memoirs, photographs, and artifacts that will take you back up to 100 years! Don't forget that ranger-led programs and Rocky Mountain Conservancy Field Institute Classes celebrate the park all year long!
