Upon his death in 1875, one of Andrew Johnson's wishes was that his body be wrapped in the most sacred of our national symbols, the U.S. Flag.  In keeping with this reverence of our flag, the Andrew Johnson National Historic Site recently held a Flag Day Program. The President's Homestead was open for a rare evening tour where visitors were invited to discover more about the U.S. Flag as they participated in a "flag facts" scavenger hunt throughout the home. Visitors were encouraged to participate in a procession from the Homestead to the Andrew Johnson National Cemetery where they assisted in carrying a garrison-size flag. Once at the cemetery, the flag was ceremonially retired in a dignified manner. Among those who attended the program were several boy scouts, girl scouts, and members of local veterans' organizations.
