Twelve Mass Parks Student Career Intake Program (SCIP) interns hosted 150 youth representing 10 Boston-area youth programs at the SCIP Youth Summit held at Lowell National Historical Park on August 16th focusing on the C2A theme: Connecting People to Parks: In My Back Yard. Each year the SCIP interns plan and host the day-long summit as part of their leadership development. The event encourages participants to share their summer experiences and celebrate their successes. Highlights included writing and photo contests depicting the theme In My Back Yard, based on their summer experiences. Team-building activities such as designing the ideal national park encouraged cooperation between youth from all programs. Youth also led workshops focusing on building resumes, creative writing, NPS careers, green energy, law enforcement and interpretation for their peers.

The SCIP interns serve as peer mentors for youth in Boston-area youth programs throughout the summer through a series of engagement activities. The summit serves as the culminating event and highlights the summer experiences while encouraging youth to seek opportunities in the National Park Service fostering Step By Step in the C2A. Parks and programs represented at the Summit include the:

  • Salem Maritime National Historic Site Future Leaders
  • Lowell National Historical Park Spindle City Corps
