GETTING READY FOR 2016:

A Call to Action
Action Item:
Go Green
Year Accomplished:
2013

The Crown of the Continent Research Learning Center Science Communication Specialist and Citizen Science Coordinator co-chair the Glacier National Park Green Team promoting resource stewardship among park staff.  The objective of the Green Team is to assist the park in implementing action items in the park's Environmental Management System (EMS). In 2012, a Native American sustainability intern developed sustainability pages to post on Glacier's public web site, and we worked with the NPS Web Services Division to add "Sustainability" as an option on the left hand navigation bar so all parks can highlight sustainability actions on their web site. Great improvements were made to the park's recycling program in campgrounds this year. Ten park buildings participated in a Green Cup Challenge achieving an 18% reduction in average energy usage with the winning building achieving a 36% reduction. Similarly, staff were challenged to reduce summer fuel use and contribute ideas to increase energy efficiency, reduce fuel usage, and reduce solid waste. In partnership with the National Parks Conservation Association, we held a workshop for local businesses in our community to discuss ways to provide consistent messaging in promoting sustainability to area visitors and clientele.
