Living history volunteers from The Friends of Valley Forge Park hosted Muhlenberg Days August 18 in order to provide demonstrations of camp life and provide demonstrations of bread baking and cooking.   They built wood fires to heat the outdoor brick oven.  Hot coals were removed from the oven to serve as the heat source for cast iron cookware in which sausage simmered in apple cider gravy.   Loaves of bread were baked in the pre-heated ovens and hot, fragrant bread was ready within a half hour, replicating the methods used during the encampment to feed the army.  Wild blackberries in the vicinity, ready for picking, added to the demonstration of a nourishing historic supper.
