GETTING READY FOR 2016:

A Call to Action
Action Item:
Take a Hike, Call Me in the Morning
Year Accomplished:
2012

In response to Call to Action #6, "Take a Hike, Call Me in the Morning," Sitka National Historical Park partnered this year with Sitka Public Health, Sitka Community Hospital and Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium to implement a Park Prescriptions program for the community of Sitka.  The program is designed to help healthcare providers prescribe outdoor activity to their patients in order to improve the overall health and wellbeing of our local community.

Although park staff only introduced the idea for the program last year at the annual Sitka Health Summit, it quickly garnered a lot of public support. The Sitka Health Summit awarded a check for $250 to Alaska Geographic to help the park offset the cost of printing the first batch of custom prescription pads.  The community-based workgroup is continuing to make contacts with local physical and mental healthcare providers to prescribe outdoor activity via this custom Park Prescription pad.
