On Veterans Day weekend 2012, the Jimmy Carter NationalHistoric Site was part of a very unique event. The Jimmy Carter NationalHistoric Site, Andersonville National Historic Site, Florence Marina StatePark, Georgia Veterans State Park, the SAM Shortline, and the River ValleyRegional Commission all partnered to bring a great cycling event to southwestGeorgia. With the "Get Outdoors Georgia" slogan ("Get out. Get dirty. Getfit.") in mind about 30 people participated in the ride, which, after beingshuttled from Plains to Florence Marina State Park Friday night, startedSaturday morning. Riders challenged themselves with 44 miles of hills fromFlorence Marina State Park, through Lumpkin, Richland, and Preston, to Plains.After arriving in Plains, riders had an opportunity to enjoy the Veterans DayCar Show and Celebration before loading their bikes onto the SAM Shortline Trainand riding to Georgia Veterans State Park. For a second night the participantsweathered the cold in tents and enjoyed festivities put on by the Georgia StateParks. Sunday started bright and early, as riders were on their way toAndersonville around 8:00am. After going through Montezuma and being greetedwith lunch in Andersonville, participants rode through Americus and finallyended in Plains after a 50+ mile day.
