The Remembrances below were left in a journal at the Liberty Island site. The state or country a person is from precedes the Remembrance.
Tennessee:
Only through remembrance of the past, will we insure our future, keep our historic sites, fund them and insure the knowledge of a new generation. The toils and tribulations others have endured in the past, so that we may be free.
Oregon:
Freedom costs! I am overwhelmed with compassion for those families and friends that lost loved ones. When one part of our country suffers, we all suffer. May God keep his grace on America. May America turn to him for strength and comfort as we begin to repair, heal, and look to our future…a continued future of justice, freedom, liberty…FOR ALL
Ohio:
I believe that as citizens of the United States of America we are blessed with being a part of the greatest country mankind has ever known. Therefore, it is our duty to love, cherish, and protect it; but also to reach out to the rest of the world so that freedom and democracy may reign throughout all countries. God Bless America and the world.
California:
I can feel the desperation, the sadness, and the hope of those who came to make America. My country without royalty but rich in culture and hope for freedom. "I am an American, I love my country more than ever." Thank you for the opportunity to express my patriotic thoughts.
California:
This monument is a reminder of the idealism upon which our country was founded. In these times, it can also be a reminder of how those ideals have become flawed, to the extent of inciting attacks from grave enemies. Perhaps returning to and remembering the pure ideals of this country is the only way to prevent instigation of future assaults and disquietude.
California:
This is my first time to New York and first time to see the statue as well. The statue is really kind of shocking and I'm unsure of my feelings upon seeing this legendary symbol of America. The words of Emma Lazarus are indeed inspiring, though sometimes I feel our country doesn't quite live up to the dream. Here's to always working towards that dream. Though, I feel that places such as this are some of the best sources of inspiration and power to achieve these and that we may find today.
New York:
Much more meaning - more solemn.
Reinvents the meaning of Liberty.
My father told a story that when he returned to NYC after WWII he threw his weapons in the water when he saw her (the Statue).
Florida:
I thought 9-11 was a great terrible thing!!! And now we should all stick together. This Statue of Liberty means to me; Welcome All! And: Show Respect to Everybody!!! Lets all remember those innocent people that died.
California:
Our history is young, yet very rich. America has done so much in so little time. It is a proud feeling to know that we are a part of such accomplishments as Americans. Nothing can take that away from us, the proud citizens of the United States of America.
California:
Statue of Liberty is a symbol of hope and promise for all who come to this country (a courageous journey for all) in order to live a better life. American is not any better than any other country, however, and former President Carter taught us that. Thank you to the FDNY, NYPD, USCG and National Park Service for protecting N.Y. as best they can.
New York:
I did not expect to find myself weeping as we approached Liberty Island, but as I tried to find words to explain Lady Liberty's significance to my son I had to choke back the tears. It is essential that we maintain our national pride through sites like Liberty Island. We have an amputated skyline, but this place still stands for something.
England:
I experienced Sept. 11 in Sydney Australia. I was very far away, but felt close to the people of NYC. As a Brit, I was very proud of the way we immediately backed up our friends in the USA. Seeing the Statue was moving, as it represents so much, especially the democracy that has been attacked. Long may it stand and represent all that is good about the western world. Peace, Empathy.
England:
Good to see the damsel standing proud. She doesn't sweat it! Takes work to make it that way.
Texas:
It's great to see that there is a wonderful symbol of our freedom standing tall in the face of all dangers. She will protect us and keep us united in the face of all dangers. God Bless America!
California:
They symbolize the freedom that our country worked so hard for over the years.
California:
A National Historic Site is a symbol of stability and strength. A chance to remember past struggles and triumphs. A place to reflect on where we have been, where we are, and where we can be in the future. Only by understanding our past can we build a better future.
Washington:
I'm not sure I even have words. My grandparents took me to many parks as a child - Grand Canyon & Great Sand Dunes in Colorado to name two. Thank you for all you do. God Bless America!
Arizona:
I am just in awe of what Liberty means to me - the Lady, the Statue - after the events of Sept. 11. May she always stand for our freedom, our country, and may all our parks always be here - from now to eternity. I'm very grateful that these historic places have been preserved and protected by generations before and those who'll follow. I'm proud to be an American - and treasure the fragile gifts of freedom we have.
Washington:
We are so blessed to enjoy the freedoms that we have. We pray others might experience truth in life. The lamp of freedom shines in each American's heart that believes in truth of Freedom and Justice for all.
Washington:
It (the Statue of Liberty) reminds us of our freedom but that we shouldn't take that freedom for granted and also to let others know that they cannot take it away from us.
England:
Even though we are so far away we still feel a great deal for the people of New York. Everyone's courage has been overwhelming and heart warming.
California:
Lady Liberty she tears watching the events of 9-11 unfold before her. May we never forget what she stands for and continue to uphold the ideals of her creation.
Louisiana:
Beauty, Please, Love, Care, and Strength.
It (the Statue of Liberty) reminds me of peace and courage. It was built with people loving and caring for each other; friendship. People work as a team on this island.
Louisiana:
Obviously this National Park is truly representative of Freedom and Liberty, the corner stones of our great nation. By coming to this place it truly allows a person to reflect on the past, present, and future state of the U.S.A. and the world. God Bless America!
Michigan:
We believe that the Statue stands for all the trials our country has gone through and shows that as a country, we've been able to pull through it all.
England:
You can destroy a building. You can murder people, but you can't kill an ideal. This statue remembers that ideal for all of us.
California:
The Statue of Liberty symbolizes Freedom for all who come here. It is even more important now after 9-11. I am from San Francisco and it troubled me very dearly. I feel American has lost her innocence, but symbols like the Statue of Liberty help remind us who we are…Americans. My prayers are with all those who lost loved ones in this terrible tragedy.
South Carolina:
Seeing this great Lady increases my fervor to stay a Free Country! Too bad some people can't accept this way of life. God Bless America!
South Carolina:
When I was a young girl I remember coming here and being amazed by what I had learned from my grandparents. Being here as an older woman, after Sept. 11, 2001 it means so much more. My grandparents always taught us to appreciate what we had and up until Sept 11th I don't think I truly appreciated what it means to be an American and have had the freedom that we will never have in quite the same way we did before Sept. 11, 2001.
Texas:
This monument is the ultimate symbol & example of freedom, and I hope it always stays safe. We must be sure to keep this statue I the minds of future generations because it will soon be in their hands! I hope the skyline view from the "Lady" will be restored with even more amazing buildings.
New York:
Those of us who are alive must live…for ourselves and for those who have gone. This is our world and it is our obligation to grow with it. Let our history fuel our future.
New Hampshire:
Freedom is very important.
Taiwan:
Bittersweet thoughts - the paradoxes of significant symbols and ideas - freedom, power, eternal ideals and monuments raised by civilizations to be covered by dust - the ideas stay with humanity - the monuments become remembered things.
Taiwan:
What does the Statue of Liberty mean to me? EVERYTHING!!
Maryland:
Post 9/11: The world will never be the same. But we will go on and someday it, and we, may be better, wiser, and kinder to all creatures. Monuments, too often portentous, are reminders of the good and bad of the past and of our natural world.
Georgia:
They may have taken the Trade Centers, but they can never take our freedom or pride. This gorgeous Statue represents so much!
Florida:
Even today, around the world there are still many oppressed people. The Statue is a beacon to those who are oppressed. Many people speaking many languages came here with a dream. The Statue is our greatest symbol of that dream.
Florida:
In times of crisis, National Parks and other Historic Sites give strength and confidence to those people to facing the crisis bravely and overcome the tragedy. This always gives remembrance of the things happened and make people stronger.
Florida:
Our parents and grandparents came over from Italy. Never really appreciated what they did for us and appreciated our heritage.
Alaska:
The parks stand for the essence of America. To close these historic sites is to close the door on what America stands for, Freedom. Do not close the door on America.
Canada:
It is important not only for Americans, but for people all over the world, to come visit this National Park and other Historic Sites and Heritage Areas to understand the beautiful history behind these amazing sites and areas.

Louisiana:
As Americans we are thankful to be free. Our "Lady" is the significance of that freedom. I am proud to be an American and to be free. I give thanks to all our veterans of all wars for that right and I mourn all those who were taken so prematurely on Sept 11, 2001.
Oregon:
This National Park and other Historic Sites and Heritage Areas in time of crisis reminds me of where we all came from, who we are, and how precious our freedom is. May it always be a free county and may god bless those who have fought for our country, past, present, and future. May God Bless all those who have suffered in these times of crisis.

As age 60 I'm glad to visit "our Lady of Freedom" and reflect on how glad I am to be an American and to be able to enjoy all the freedoms she stands for. This is my first visit and it has been very enjoyable and memorable.
State: Indiana
Kansas:
To me, when I see the Statue of Liberty, it makes me grateful for my freedom and my life. September 11 was a tragic day but America united and we didn't let this bring us down. People that would try to hurt us are jealous of our freedom. p.s. She is truly Beautiful!
California:
This National Park embodies an idea particularly critical at such a time of crisis: Freedom and Liberty for All. All of the world is welcomed and unified by this symbol. All of the immigrants, peoples of the world, throughout history have come and met an idea that creates a solidarity within diversity. This is what is pondered here and give us all strength, inspiration, and a renewal of hope of our highest ideals as Americans.

I have never been in so much shock. Yet never have I been so proud of my country. I will never see our country as the same. We need to remember this and show our pride while showing our loss! GO STATUE OF LIBERTY!

Now that this has happened it has made seeing New York and all its beauty such a different experience. Parks and sites like this make me want to know more about our country and it's history. God Bless.
California:
Thought and Comments - (This is in no particular order)
- To remember our past, connect with each other, celebrate the events, people, & traditions that make us (and thus our country) who we are
- And hopefully also learn from our mistakes
- To always remember those who serve & protect and whose sacrifices made it possible for us to enjoy our freedoms.
California:
I'm proud to be called an American because of all we have. Let Freedom and Liberty Ring & Reign Forever.
Venezuela:
The Statue of Liberty is the symbol of the Freedom world. I'm from Venezuela and I love the U.S.A. It is a great Nation!
Canada:
It's all in what Miss Lazarus said and it's what is great about America. May these monuments stand as long as our freedom does.
Iowa:
September 11th was a tragic event that we all will remember. This Park shows the freedom of America that so many people desperately wanted. Visiting parks put us in touch in realizing what a great place we live in and makes us realize that being free is an amazing thing.
United Kingdom:
The Statue - What an incredible sight! I realize I've been traumatized after September 11th and feel better coming here. But the pure evil of someone throwing a plane in a built-up area. New York City can take anything!
I am grateful that we are able to preserve National Monuments. I only wish we continue to preserve what we have after the horrible events of September 11.
United Kingdom:
I am happy to see these sites, but when you look in the distance you can tell there's a part of New York missing - the Twin Towers will be lost, but still remembered.
Georgia:
Every American monument now seems to represent a greater sense of Americanism - Especially Ground Zero and the Statue of Liberty, because sadly - she had to watch the terrible events of 911 as they happened.
Texas:
As a flight attendant for American Airlines, it touches my heart to be in New York and see the Statue of Liberty representing our FREEDOM! I love our Country and our people!
Kentucky:
The historic sites of our nation tell us where we have been as a country. They help us to remember our blessings and trials. This country was founded on God and only he will see us through 9/11. What a crime. An historic event I wish did not exist in our history.
New York:
We were "Privileged" to be able to see the site of the former World Trade Center on Saturday, June 8, 2002. We were very moved. Thank you for the opportunity. I would like to see some permanent remembrance controlled by the National Park Service. Maybe pennies and nickels from school kids could fund it like they did for the Statue of Liberty.
