The Remembrances below were left in journals at the Gateway National Recreation Area sites. The state or country a person is from precedes the Remembrance.
Remembrances from Staten Island Unit
New York:
I have fond memories as a child, I would come to Fort Wadsworth commissary when it was located in the old Fort. My father is a retired Army/Airforce officer and we'd park the car under the Verrazano Narrows Bridge and watch the progress of its construction. What a spectacular view! It is so nice to see how clean and upgraded the facility has been maintained.
New York:
Very Bad Day!
New York:
Today, June 2, 2002, we realized we are not untouchable and we must protect ourselves as we did at the time of the fort (Fort Wadsworth) and war.
New York:
Today is June 5th, 2002. Just being near to where the buildings fell and so many brave and productive lives were lost, is so overwhelming. Their spirits hover forever. May God keep them in his embrace forever!
New Jersey:
Beautiful bridge view (regarding the NPS video) - one appreciates the grandeur of New York City. A new film made after September 11, 2001 should be made because the current one from 1997 shows the World Trade Center at the end when talking about how secure New York City is from an attack.
Remembrances from Jamaica Bay Unit
New York:
While for most of my life I have taken this country and all of its beauty for granted. After 9/11 the intense love for all that I know, the bridge I travel over, the water I swim in, this wonderful Park, became more beautiful and sacred to me. The fear of something happening to it makes me shudder. I love THIS COUNTRY and I love THIS PARK. I will never take it for granted anymore.
New York:
This National Park - Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge (Gateway) - is peaceful, beautiful, and a place to find solace.
New York:
This Park is a refuge from the rat race. It is sad to miss the World Trade Center in the distant skyline, however.
Remembrances from Sandy Hook Unit
New Jersey:
The Park is a great place to relax and pray for all mankind. People were at the beach. They were lighting candles and I was very sad for those people who died. God Bless America.
New Jersey:
It's wonderful to know that in spite of everything - there are still places like this that we can come to and be reminded that there are beautiful places and that we are truly blessed.
Pennsylvania:
When there is war and rumors of war, it is a blessing to come to this place for spiritual inspiration and relaxation. I am grateful to creator God and the human hands that work together for the preservation of this Park.
New Jersey:
God Bless America! Let there be PEACE.
New Jersey:
We will Survive!
