The Remembrances below were left in a journal at the Federal Hall site. The state or country a person is from precedes the Remembrance.
New York:
As a life long resident and worker in New York, and as an architect, I wish they would replace the World Trade Center buildings as they were, with a memorial in the plaza. Architecture and engineering could make it a safer place and a symbol of New York that would be a lesson to terrorists.
New York:
It is a day that I will always remember. It makes those who survived feel a sense of increased value to be able to be free in a world where many people do not have such freedoms. Life seems to have added meaning and value. One should treasure everyday that he is able to freely cherish life. May all the families who lost loved ones on 9-11 be comforted and feel no more pain.
Japan:
Normal Peace for all Nations!!
Korea:
Really proud Heritage!
New York:
Since September 11, 2001, many hearts have changed. They are more loving and sincere. I think we all now know the meaning of family, friend and associate. We take life more seriously. I would like to send my condolences to the victims and families of September 11, 2001. I also think since Sept. 11 we appreciate these Historical Sites, we never know what might happen again. God Bless America.
New York:
This is my second visit to this place, where Mr. Washington became President of a new Nation by the "voluntary consent of so many distinct communities," as he said in this Inaugural speech. Today's community, today's United States, has grown proud and strong. God Bless the US!
North Carolina:
My first visit - having just finished David McCullough's book on "John Adams," describing Washington's Inaugural and Adam's tenure as Vice President - presiding over the Senate upstairs. I wanted to see this building, my emotions are mixed - patriotism at being on this historic spot, and grief as I just walked from ground zero, where the immense World Trade Center stood only a few months ago. God Bless America!
Germany:
I think peace for all, for all religions and countries! We need nothing else.
France:
We will hardly ever forget this dark day…and today, we have the proof that the United States [with their National Parks] keep their memory alive while keeping hope in the future…we shall never forget…
New York:
Preserve this great National Park FOREVER!
Alabama:
We enjoyed this visit to New York City. Thanks for preserving this for our children and grandchildren.
Luxembourg:
Freedom is not without loss - God Bless America.
Belgium:
This is my first visit to New York. It is a lovely city and I would like to give my condolences to the ones who lost people they loved.
Peru:
This is my first time here, your city is really beautiful! I am sorry about what happened on September 11th.
California:
Reminders of our heritage, of values timeless, foundation for tomorrow!
New York:
It is inspiring to bring my class here - where they can absorb the "aura" of freedoms past, present and enduring future.
North Carolina:
What an incredible and even terrible mix of emotions this area has brought us. From the joy and laughter a NY PD officer brought us at World Trade Center platform to the tears shed.
Netherlands:
I think you should keep all the National Parks open. I love it here!
Italy:
We were, we are, and we will be forever beside you proud people of America, in this struggle against the evil. God Bless the USA and Italy.
Thailand:
We're so sorry about that event. Hopefully, God Bless all of you. KEEP WALKING USA!
Israel:
As a history teacher and proud American, I believe it is so important to preserve our country's history. I am grateful for the opportunity to visit America's historical landmarks. I hope that we will continue to preserve our past, so future generations can touch real-life American history too.
Ireland:
No words to express my condolence to what happened. I must also say to "Stop making business on people's death (such postcards are not nice)." I must express my condolences for the NYFD and NYPD, I hope from now on we will be more human, and that stupid things such as "infinite justice" won't happen anymore. Is it human to bomb by mistake the Red Cross?
Florida:
We come from Orlando, and I've never seen a more united and patriotic city than New York. The dedication and faith of all the firefighters, policemen, construction workers, and citizens is incredible. I am proud to call America home, and I'm so glad to see New Yorkers reinstate our faith in this country.
Kentucky:
Our country's reaction to these tragic events has made me thankful and proud to be an American.
Israel:
Seeing symbolic buildings that survived so many years such as the Federal Hall, shows that despite the disaster that happened, America is a strong Nation and that being gathered and united it will overcome.
Ireland:
I don't think the towers should be rebuilt, they were too high. I think the site should be used as a memorial park for the people and families who lost their lives.
Oregon:
We came to support New York from Redmond, Oregon. We love the people and the way we have been treated. Please consider reconstructing the Twin Tower lights (beacons that can be seen from a long way off). It ought to be an open park in my opinion.
California:
The site of the Twin Towers is one of the few places where the bedrock can support such tall buildings. The strength of the ground should be used in a tasteful memory of 9-11.
Georgia:
We share the East Coast. We love NYC and you are in our prayers!
Illinois:
Today is Flag Day 2002 - June 14 - a day to remember what the flag symbolizes. I can't think of a more fitting memorial to both the flag, the heroes, and the victims of our Nation than visiting this site and seeing other painful reminders that our past wasn't always noble -wasn't always symbolic of freedom & liberty for ALL! "If I can stop one heart from breaking…or heal our pain…I shall not live in vain" Emily Dickenson
New Jersey:
May we always have the courage to be real patriots. To question the actions of our leaders with as much fervor as we are willing to defend the principles of our sacred democracy. -Peace-
Texas:
Our historic sites are our national memory. They must be preserved and honored. May God Bless America.
Michigan:
I teach American History to 8th graders in Michigan. History was "in the making", and I never had students so interested and so intent on learning U.S. History, the concerns and heartaches were very real, when it affected them!
Washington:
We need to preserve both the "good" and "bad" parts for they were real and part of our history. Democracy is not yet 300 years old, and we need to be sure we don't lose it in trying to "rewrite" to be politically correct. I love our National Parks and buildings and the great job you are doing - keep doing it!
Germany:
One of the sources of terrorism in the world is inequality. If you want to live in peace you must not fight wars. U.S. sign the Kyoto Protocol!
California:
My earliest American ancestors were here in 1680. They came for freedom from persecution. We must retain, at any cost, our rights to freedom.
Georgia:
I love America dearly, but we still need to do our part in stopping Terrorism across the world. Understanding and really standing for freedom for all could have stopped this horrible tragedy! Please pray for all the ones who lost their lives.
Spain:
It is important to remember our heritage to make for a more peaceful future.
Florida:
I'm getting chills thinking about what happened here…George Washington covered in dust, Wall Street in chaos. This is truly the greatest city in the world.
New York:
I think this site is of enormous historical importance, but my guess is that it is under utilized and should be "advertised" more vigorously on a local basis. Living in New York City for 20 years, I've never heard it mentioned by anyone that they actually entered this building.
Rhode Island:
My husband is an officer in the United States Navy and on 9-11 (our 2nd wedding Anniversary) we were stationed in Norway. I don't ever, in my life, want to be that far away from America again. We bless every single family, not just America, but the world over -who are instruments of peace and will hold our wedding anniversary (9-11) especially close, and will always remember those lost with pride and reverence. God Bless America!
Texas:
I am disappointed the original Federal Hall was not preserved but this remains a fitting tribute!
New York:
Federal Hall is the spot on which the Republic, conceived elsewhere, first saw the light of day and took its first breath. It deserves wider attention and acclaim. It has gotten "lost in the shuffle" of history, although the history actually started here. Can something be done?
California:
We are all one Nation and stand together to defend our unique freedom. This building is a link to our founding elders.
California:
We must never forget and must always guard against what led up to the atrocities of Sept 11, 2001. Should we forget and become "normal", history will repeat itself.
England:
This historic site (Federal Hall) remains as a perpetual memorial to the founding of a great Nation, which must and will endure. God Bless America.
New York:
We should preserve our historical sites - they are important to us and to the folks of the future! I'm glad I live in New York - there is no place else like it in the world!
Argentina:
This is a big country and a very good Nation. Your institutions are strong. It is a pleasure to visit here…Thanks!
