      Remembrances from Castle Clinton

The Remembrances below were left in a journal at the Castle Clinton site. The state or country a person is from precedes the Remembrance.

Pennsylvania:
The meaning of the entire National Park System is pride and preservation of the land, people, and concepts that make America the leading nation of freedom in the world today.

Scotland:
The tragic event affected all around the world. Our thoughts and prayers are still with you all.

Colorado:
I grew up in the great City of New York and watched the Twin Towers being built. I went on several "dates" at Windows of the World. Now, I live in Denver, CO. My heart aches everyday for our loss…But I owe my memories of NYC to my grandparents who arrived at Ellis Island in the early 1900's.

Virginia:
They give us ways to be able to move forward yet never forget. Our thoughts and prayers go on.

New York:
As a New Yorker from Larchmont, all my thoughts, prayers, and thanks to everyone who helped others and those who died. As a New York City resident for many years I feel your pain.

Canada:
For all that's happened, life goes on but we learn from this tragedy that love and family are the most important!

South Africa:
The most tragic event in the history of mankind! My thoughts are with those who perished, those who survived, and friends, family, and relatives.

Ohio:
It makes us not forget the past, although it may be painful. We can learn from tragedies. This is the only good that can come out of it.

Missouri:
Through the records and artifacts that you have preserved so beautifully, I see that the very strength of our nation has been built on the frailty of individual people like me. Their determination, courage, and hard work to make life better for future generations is a unity-building legacy for me to pass on.

Maryland:
After all this tragedy, the United States of America is STRONGER and TOGETHER more than ever. God Bless the New York Fire Department and the New York Police Department. My heart and prayers go out to all the people who lost their lives and their family. New York is one of the best cities in the world. We love you!

Pennsylvania:
Despite the tragic loss of life and sense of security, I am more proud then ever to be an American, due to the compassion of the American people. National Parks and Historic areas provide a place to celebrate the American spirit.

Pennsylvania:
I find a sense of security and hope as I visit the important and historic areas of New York. Many people came (and still come) to New York in search of opportunity and growth - no one can ever take that from us. God bless everyone who has helped those in need as we re-build and find our way to greater hope, peace and security.

England:
What a fabulous place, the people are brilliant and friendly. The best holiday I've ever had. Deepest sympathy to all New York people, family, and relatives.

England:
The National Parks are just one great feature of a great city. Such a sad day for everyone on September 11th.

England:
Like everyone around the world I sat looking at the T.V. unable to believe the tragedy unfolding before the world. To the people who perished, their families, and friends - you're forever in our hearts.

England:
They are places of reflection on history and the transitory nature of life. Despite death and tragedy life goes on. But we should always remember those who died before us and especially those who die for us in times of war and conflict.

Oregon:
How do you say - this can't be. Sorrow fills my heart and my thoughts. Yet my soul knows we all shall get through this. To the one's who lost their spouses or children or friends - I say my heart and soul are with you. God Bless America…Peace, Love, & Happiness forever!!!

Australia:
Your loss is our loss! Our freedom, our love for life. But good often comes from bad we can turn this around with positive energy.

Virginia:
My grandmother came through this site at the age of 14. She came to buy a sewing machine and never returned to Sicily. Because of her spirit, courage, and vision, my family exists in the United States. Her spirit lives on past 9-11. God Bless All...

Australia:
You endure; your strength is your survival mechanism. Your suffering and loss is our suffering and loss. May peace be with us all.

England:
It's a beautiful City - always will be! Hold on to that and the memory of your loved ones. God Bless.

Florida:
America will only stand if we all become totally aware that we can't do it alone - we have to be united and treat each day as it were the first, with all people that have made this their home.

New York:
We will never forget this day! We will never forget the people lost.

Massachusetts:
A Beautiful Place! A Beautiful Country! God Bless America!

Massachusetts:
To all America and the world: Be kind to one another. It is a short trip (life). May love out run hate! God Bless.

Pennsylvania:
Seven months later - we have a greater respect for the things that were always here and suffer a great loss for what is no more. Perhaps this is another one of life's great lessons. We will remember but we must go on.

New Hampshire:
Nothing has intrinsically changed. All persons everywhere want to be accepted, loved, have a home and a circle of loved ones where they can live in harmony and freedom.

Virginia:
Our prayers to those lost and those away from home and country who continue to fight for (our) security and freedom. God Bless America!

New York:
We need our National Parks and Historic Sites. For us, our children, their children, etc, to remember all those before us who shed their blood, sweat and tears to build and unite our country. Hopefully, we will respect our National Parks in the wilderness also for future generations. We will always remember our beloved towers and those who died there. I hope and pray for no further attacks and peace for all men and women.

New York:
National Park Service represents America very well!

Maryland:
The Parks and Historic Sites are comforting, the idea of a continuing heritage and stability in spite of crisis. Some things do not last - but the spirit of the twin towers is not gone and the pilgrimage will continue to World Trade Center site as well.

California:
These Sites help Americans connect to our past and reinforce our hope for the future.

California:
We need National Parks and Historic Sites to appreciate and remember this great country we live in. We will never forget…9.11.01!

Washington:
I never realized the REAL magnitude and size of such a great city - "New York." How could anyone do such a devastating thing to such a great place? My heart goes out to the people of this City. I think I love New York City.

India:
Historic Sites and Heritage Areas start meaning something to us only if we take pride in who we are and where we belong. But more important than that - is understanding that we are all one and not to fight over our creations, when we are all a part of one creator.

Massachusetts:
I am proud to be a first generation American - my Dad came through Ellis Island - Our heritage is wonderful!

Massachusetts:
We must never forget our past and take for granted "freedom."

Germany:
The world will never be the same again! A little bit like after World War II. But I hope there is nothing and no one who can destroy a democratic country.

Malaysia:
We learn the experiences from the past to build a better future for our children. Learn to live in PEACE. We live in the same world!

New York:
On the day of 9-11, I went through so much not knowing if my brother or niece were alive, but thank God they survived. But I cry and feel the suffering of all those who lost their sons, daughters, mothers and families, who worked in the World Trade Center. I thank God and all those who helped and participated on this day. Thank God for America and the great people who live in it, and the volunteers, Policemen, Firemen, Red Cross, and all people in general. God Bless America and all Nations, may we all live united always and stand strong.

Massachusetts:
Thank you, hardworking hard hats!!

This castle is very nice and an attractive structure. It contains never-ending appeal.

California:
God Bless you and Thank you! May your effortless work be remembered

New York:
New York's bravest is still at work trying to bring their last brother home. Terrorists will never understand that strength and integrity.

Portugal:
God bless all mankind and those who make an effort for humanities survival.

New York:
Remembering History is an important part of education and growing up. Time heals all wounds, but a memory can last forever. Believe in the future and you can change to world.

Scotland:
It's important to remember the past, so that the mistakes cannot be and will not be repeated. From Scotland, we wish you to know that we share the same raw emotion, the same grief, and the same hope for the future. America will build again, will prosper again, and will dream again, but will not forget the sons and daughters they lost along the way. God Bless America, God Bless Peace and let's pray for a peaceful and prosperous world!

Pennsylvania:
My great grandfather was employed by Castle Garden in 1865 as a contractor. Our family is grateful that this monument is saved.

France:
Once you get a bite of that "Apple" (New York City) you're definitely hooked!! I have been nicely hooked!

Argentina:
The perfect country doesn't exist, but if it would it would be the USA, because countries should be measured by their values. God bless the USA and the good people from all over the World.

California:
The Parks and Monuments re-emphasize our American Values and Unity in the face of Adversity. New York and America will persevere.

New York:
This is truly a reminder of how strong we are and a symbol of our strength. We are going to get past this devastating event together, but we MUST respect and help each other regardless of race, age, or color. God Bless!!!

Life must go on, although it hurts to see those people who sacrificed their lives. They will always be remembered and truly heroes of the world. God Bless America!

England:
Came to New York to show solidarity. We will stand together!

Norway:
We, as we come from Norway, understand how these attacks have had a massive impact throughout the world. We pray and we hope that we today are able to prevent attacks like these for years to come.

Austria:
New York City is an absolutely great place but I think that Americans (esp. the government and President Bush) should also see the other countries of this world. Not everything can go the American way of life. I am frightened that American will get us all in big trouble. Please consider the attitudes and people, which are not American. There is a big, big world outside America.

Philippines:
I should have seen this place before September 11. Today it is a dream come true! Brave is America!

New York:
This America to which I came and learned to love is endowed with beauty and majesty that is revealed in its people of diversity. It is great because of the richness of its greatness and the supreme spirit, which make her strong in kindness, love and her pursuit of peace and happiness to all who come to love and know her greatest qualities.

South Africa:
Keep Your Spirits High!

Philippines:
They reflect the spirit that made America great and they remind us deeply of the courage and fortitude that people from all over the world have in themselves if they aspire for greatness.

Washington:
The thoughts of freedom and a new beginning. My father entered in the United States in 1917 as an illegal immigrant, a "paper son." He made his way to California and started his life. He drove taxis and headed north to Seattle where he became involved as a printer for Bar-S, a meat plant. At one point, he possessed the first Chinese printing press in Seattle. Eventually, he became a restaurateur and all of his five children have gone on to successful careers. America gave him a wonderful opportunity, which he passed on to his children.
