  Superintendent's Letter

The following letter from Superintendent Laura Joss, accompanied the flag that was sent to Senator Barbara Mikluski for presentation to the New York Congressional delegation.

September 17, 2001

This flag, flown over Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine, honors the people of New York who were especially touched by the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Many years ago, Francis Scott Key saw a similar flag proudly waving over the ramparts of the fort. The flag symbolized the American spirit and its ability to persevere in times of crisis. It inspired him to write a poem, which became our National Anthem. Together, the anthem and the flag are the strongest symbols of the United States. It is some comfort that during the present time of adversity, Americans can look to their history for inspiration.

We present this flag as a token of support from the staff of the National Park Service at Fort McHenry and the people of the State of Maryland.

Sincerely,

Laura Joss
General Superintendent
