One of ten camps at which Japanese American citizens and resident Japanese aliens were interned during World War II, Manzanar is a national historic site with a powerful
civil rights story. As a result, staff and visitors to Manzanar mourned the events of September 11th with an eye to this historical context.
Manzanar remained open to the public throughout the day on September 11th and thereafter. Visitors left flags and other 9-11 offerings at the site, including a large flag on the historic Manzanar Relocation Center sign, and small flags on the locust pole fence surrounding the cemetary.
