Natural areas, beaches and trails, including Muir Woods, were left open. All Park areas were opened on Sept. 12. The Park provided security (US Park Police and Law Enforcement Rangers) at Golden Gate Bridge and detailed Rangers for extra security at several dams in California, the USS Arizona Memorial, the Dept. of Interior building in Washington, D.C., and (later) to the Olympics in Utah. US Park Police went to 12 hours shifts for months at the Park sites. National and international visitation to Alcatraz dropped significantly after September 11, 2001 and remained at low levels until March of 2002. Concession and Cooperating Association staff at Alcatraz were reduced accordingly during this period.
