  Interviews / Oral Histories

Sgt. Ron Galey, U.S. Park Police
"And I really didn't have to say anything to the crews. Everybody just knew in their hearts what had happened. And they were running, getting their gear, getting the aircraft cranked up. And I would estimate only about three and a half to four minutes passed before we had both aircraft in the air, and on the scene over at the Pentagon from the time the aircraft hit it. So that was pretty much the initial response."

J. Mel Poole, Superintendent, Catoctin Mountain Park
"And so the question becomes, do you get everyone out of the school, do you notify the school, how do you deal with that emotion level. I also had a personal responsibility as well as a professional responsibility, and no information to make those decisions at that point. So there was an hour of terror there that was pretty real for me"

Dwight Dixon, District Ranger, Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park
"With rollaway beds and strollers and blankets and, basically, they just got them out of the building and then they took them to that area. … There were probably about 50 to 60, altogether -- staff and children from infants up to toddlers in age that were all, I guess, children of the staff from the Pentagon. …Our purpose was to…make sure that the children and the staff there were secure, and had whatever supplies that they needed."
