Ceramic Residue Dates

Introduction

Sherd Interior
Burned residue on sherd interior.
Samples of burned residue were scraped from interior surfaces of nine sherds and were dated using the Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) technique. This dating technique is used for small samples containing less than 0.3 grams of carbon. The nine sherds are shown in the table below. Many are photographed with clay casts that highlight the cordage impressed on the exterior of the sherds.
