| Perhaps because of the controversy over the mutiny trial,
the heroes of Port Chicago were forgotten. Five men were however, recognized
for their courage in the face of disaster. They were awarded the
Navy's Bronze Star for extinguishing a fire in a boxcar loaded with explosives.
Early after the disaster, men raced to the scene. Eager to do what they
could, they sprang into action when a fiery inferno erupted in a nearby
railway boxcar filled with high explosives. Their quick action prevented
further casualties, and damage to the facility. |
