Like
the word “watershed”, protect it and make it science-based.
The
region is the source of genetic diversity. Study and research are needed
to protect species.
Consider
adaptive management approaches to respond to climate change.
The
Department of Fish and Game supports the concept of increased wildlife and
vegetation research and monitoring in the proposed area but respectfully
requests that we have an equal place at the planning table with other
agency resource management staff.
Additional
research should be conducted to evaluate the effects of global warming on
biota in this range, as existing projections offer conflicting results.
I
didn't notice very much explicitly addressed to the concerns of the urban
wildland interface, which is such a huge problem in the LA area. Can the
NPS help provide research and motivation to local communities to manage
suburban sprawl and prevent its ill effects on the wildlands?
The
San Gabriel Mountains and the Puente-Chino Hills represent important
examples of the native Southern California
landscape. The San Gabriel Mountains are
significant for geologic resources, and biodiversity, dynamic river
systems, and a long history of scientific study and discovery. The
Puente-Chino Hills are significant for rare native plant communities,
including coastal sage scrub and walnut woodlands.
The
Department of Fish and Game is required to obtain information about
wildlife and fish populations prior to allowing their consumptive use in
order to insure sustainability of the resource. Also, the Department is
required to assess sensitive resources to determine species status. The
Department is concerned that National Park Policy, as part of a San
Gabriel Watershed and Mountains Recreation Area could limit our
opportunities to freely access, monitor, and manage wildlife populations
where mechanized travel is necessary to facilitate these conservation
objectives.
Little to no real research/vision for sustainable (and
regenerative) discussions and methods for fire and for watershed best
management practices – leading to better management of land, resources and
sustainable recreation practices/design.
