California Trails Connection Website A website, jointly sponsored by the National Park Service, California Department of Parks and Recreation, the California Department of Health, and the Rails to Trails Conservancy to distribute information about planning, developing, managing, and finding trails in California.Carquinez Strait Heritage Area A partnership effort to highlight and promote the Carquinez Strait and its role in regional exploration, transportation, shipbuilding, and fishing.Hydropower Relicensing Restoring and enhancing rivers in California through the federal hydropower relicensing process. RTCA will work in collaboration with other agencies, applicants and interest groups for recreation and environmental enhancements on individual dam relicensing projects, including those on the Pit, Feather, San Joaquin, Klamath and Stanislaus Rivers.Los Osos Coastal Dunes Conservation Partnership A land conservation initiative involving protection of rare coastal dune scrub habitat and a number of threatened and endangered species. The lands are located within the urban reserve line of the community of Los Osos, lying adjacent to Morro Bay. RTCA will assist with outreach planning. The primary cooperator is the Morro Estuary Greenbelt Alliance, supported by a partnership of local, state and federal agencies and land conservation organizations.Paradise Creek Educational Park A community partnership to reconstruct a tidal wetland adjacent to an elementary school in this underserved residential and industrial neighborhood. RTCA has worked to gain the support of key stakeholders for the concept plan. In 1998 the California Coastal Conservancy funded the project, enabling National City to move ahead with implementation.Pedro Point Headlands
A proposed 6 mile trail loop providing public access and habitat protection along the Sacramento River, two creeks, several schools and three city parks. Cooperators include the City of Red Bluff, California State University at Chico and local schools.San Gabriel River at Azusa Convening and coordinating stakeholders to plan for the use and enhancement of the San Gabriel River and adjacent publicly owned lands within the City of Azusa in southern California. Possible outcomes include parkland development, in-river recreational uses, and adaptation of existing stormwater recharge basins for multiple uses.San Joaquin River (Firebaugh-Mendota) An effort to restore and enhance a 12-mile section of the San Joaquin River to create a continuous riparian corridor. Cooperators include the Bureau of Reclamation, the Friant Dam Water Users Authority, and the City of Firebaugh. In FY 99, RTCA will assist partners in developing implementation plans for one or more pilot restoration or recreation projects within the corridor.Santa Cruz County Sanctuary Trail Developing an interpretive plan for the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Coastal Trail in Santa Cruz County. The goal of the project is to enhance coastal public access and to promote discovery of the unique relationship between Monterey Bay's extraordinary marine environment and the natural, cultural, and historic resources of Santa Cruz County.Shasta Trinity Trails Connection Project Developing a concept plan to link Shasta and Trinity counties with a trail, following the Sacramento River and Clear Creek and connecting Shasta, Trinity, and Whiskeytown lakes.Tomales Bay Assisting Point Reyes National Seashore, other agencies, and the surrounding community in developing guidelines to protect the critical natural resources of Tomales Bay while providing for its compatible recreational and commercial use.Truckee Regional Trails and Bikeways Master Plan A community-based planning initiative with the goal of creating a town-wide trail system with linkages to regional open space and nationally significant recreational resources within the greater Truckee region. RTCA will provide facilitation support and technical assistance to the overall master planning effort. The primary cooperator is the Town of Truckee.
East Maui Heritage Project A community movement to conserve rural landscape and way of life along the corridor of Maui's famed "Road to Hana". RTCA's first work with the Alliance for the Heritage of East Maui helped inspire state historic road legislation and won support from national-level preservationists and planners. With RTCA assistance local residents and resource specialists are now crafting a long-term preservation strategy highlighting Native Hawaiian cultural heritage.Honouliuli Preserve Outreach Strategy Working with The Nature Conservancy of Hawai'i and residents of O'ahu to expand public involvement in planning and resource management at 3700 acre Honouliuli Preserve. RTCA helped establish a public input process and an advisory group to guide development of a new Master Plan for the preserve, and provides facilitation for advisory group and public meetings. Release of the new Master Plan is scheduled for fall of 2000.Ka'apuni O Hawai'i Pathway People's Advocacy for Trails Hawai'i (PATH) has developed a plan for an extensive multi-use trail system on the "Big Island" of Hawaii. RTCA is helping PATH develop a pilot partnership project with private landowners -- whose vast holdings occupy much of the island -- to practice joint solution of management issues when public trails are proposed for private properties.Ke Ala Loa o Maui This is the Hawaiian name for the "King’s Trail," an ancient Hawaiian footpath passing through public and private lands around the perimeter of the island of Maui. Courts have determined the trail is state-owned. RTCA is working with the state trails program to identify stakeholders and develop a selective strategy for interpretation and enhancement of trail segments suited for public access.
The local vision for this coastal corridor features interpreted natural and cultural sites linked by a coastal trail and cared for by community stewards. RTCA provided technical assistance for corridor planning and interpretative projects that led to revision of the Community Plan ordinance, and to County funding for a regionwide Open Space Master Plan. A local community association hosts this community-based planning process with help from RTCA. Southern Nevada Regional Trails Partnership A multi-faceted effort to collaboratively develop a Clark County trails plan while facilitating community-based trail development. RTCA will provide technical support in documenting existing and proposed connections, outreach and organizational development assistance, and general guidance to the planning effort. The primary cooperator is Clark County, Department of Comprehensive Planning.Great Basin Heritage Area
A team of public agencies, non-profit organizations, and educational institutions brought together to assist community-based projects that contribute to the planned stewardship and protection of natural resources and open space in the Las Vegas and Eldorado Valleys. The Partnership includes representatives of federal, state and local agencies and community interests. RTCA will provide ongoing technical and organizational development assistance.
Truckee River Floodplain Management A collaborative effort with the Army Corps of Engineers, Washoe County and the cities of Reno and Sparks to evaluate flood control options along the Truckee River, including non-structural solutions. RTCA will assist with community involvement in developing alternatives. |
