Rescheduled Release of Draft Special Resource Study

The release of the draft National Park Service Special Resource Study of Fort Hunter Liggett has been rescheduled to October, 2001. The original schedule was greatly accelerated from normal study schedules to meet the demands of the pre-existing BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure Commission) closure date of July 13, 2001. However, it was not possible to hold to the accelerated schedule due to numerous challenges in the study process, changes in the inventory of excess buildings available to the NPS, and other factors.

If you receive this newsletter by mail from the NPS, you are on our mailing list and will receive a copy of the draft study and notification of public meetings and other opportunities to comment on the study. If you would like to be added to the mailing list, please contact us (see contact information below).

Modification to BRAC Closure

The Deputy Secretary of the Army notified NPS on July 12, 2001 that the original BRAC excess

property list would be substantially reduced to include only the historic properties. Property still on the excess list and proposed for transfer to the NPS is limited to:

  • the Hacienda complex (including service buildings, swimming pool and tennis court)
  • several historic ranch houses
  • the Gil Adobe
  • 1 acre of land under and adjacent to the Tidball Store.
The draft Special Resource Study will evaluate the suitability and feasibility of NPS management of these historic buildings, as well as additional NPS involvement with the Army at FHL to provide increased visitor use opportunities and cooperative resource management, and will include long-term protection alternatives.
