Fuels Treatments Involving Rare Plants: Fuel treatments on Inverness Ridge are careful to minimize impacts on a rare species of manzanita, Arctostaphyols virgata. Here, a weed-wacker is used to remove fuel around one of these shrubs. This species is known only to Marin County, and requires heat from fire for the seed coat to open and allow germination to take place. This shrub was scarce before the Vision Fire, but has since flourished.
