Tree Thinning: In this thinning project, dense young, competing trees are removed and the strongest healthiest trees are left. Notice the difference in the stem diameters in the trees in this photo. The trees that have been left would probably have outcompeted many of the others over time. These trees are located along a path leading from a residential subdivision into the park. Thinning trees at the edge of the park is part of a community-based wildland-urban interface fire protection program.
