"The national park idea has been nurtured by each succeeding generation of Americans. Today, across our land, the National Park System represents America at its best. Each park contributes to a deeper understanding of the history of the United States and our way of life; of the natural processes which have given form to our land, and to the enrichment of the environment in which we live." George B. Hartzog, Jr. – NPS Director, 1964-1972 Every summer millions of Americans, as well as visitors from around the world, make a visit to at least one of America’s National Parks. There are now 390 units in a National Park System that preserves and protects many of this nations’ most valued natural and cultural areas. From the shores of Maine and Alaska to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado to the warm beaches of California and the Virgin Islands, national parks offer something for everyone. This summer travel season will offer many new and exciting adventures for park visitors. In addition to the many traditional ranger led programs in the parks, there are many more special programs available for visitors to enjoy and a number of new facilities opening to the public this year. The National Park Service has the honor of preserving stunning natural areas such as Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona or Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming/Montana, hallowed areas such as Gettysburg National Military Park in Pennsylvania or Kings Mountain National Military Park in South Carolina, and historic homes such as Harry S Truman National Historic Site in Missouri and Adams National Historical Park in Massachusetts. What better way to enjoy your summer than to visit a National Park and enjoy one of the many exceptional programs available to visitors. The National Park Service has developed and made available a web site to help inform visitors about some of the special events and activities that have been planned for the upcoming travel season and information about what’s new in national parks this year. Visit the “National Parks: The Place to be for Family Fun” website at http://www.nps.gov to learn more about what’s happening in national parks across the country.
