National Public Lands Day - September 26th Make America's Best Idea better!

Join us on September 26th for National Public Lands Day! Take part in one of many projects that will be taking place at this fun annual volunteer event, such as trail work, cabin restoration, painting/staining, and general site clean-up. Event begins at 9 am at Cabin Camp 4 (off of route 234). Breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Each year hundreds of volunteers contribute nearly 20,000 hours of service to Prince William Forest Park. Some service groups come for the day, other volunteers stay for months. Some are students and others are retirees looking for adventure during their "golden years." Some maintain and/or patrol trails while others work as campground hosts or as visitor center personnel. But regardless of age or background, these folks share a desire to make a positive contribution to the management of the park. Volunteers are a valuable and valued part of our operation and our community. Please see below for a list of opportunities. The park may provide trailer or recreational vehicle campsites with full hookups or housing and utilities for some positions. For more information regarding Prince William Forest Park's volunteer program, please contact the Park Volunteer Coordinator by phone (703-221-7181) or by email.

National Public Lands Day Photo Contest Calling All Shutterbugs and Videographers! While planting trees, repairing trails and restoring shorelines on National Public Lands Day, don't forget to get out those cameras -- photo and video-- and take some great shots of your fellow volunteers! Participate in our Ninth Annual NPLD Volunteers in Action Photo and Video Contest. This year a new category for short videos has been created for those talented but undiscovered film directors out there. The Volunteers in Action contest allows NPLD volunteers to showcase their talent with the backdrop of our country's public lands. In addition to great prizes from Patagonia, entrants may have their work featured on NEEF's Web site, in promotional materials for NPLD 2010 and more.

Great Horned Owl

Did You Know?
An owl's eyes are fixed in place because their large size provides no room for muscle. To compensate for this, it can turn its head in almost any direction and angle, including the ability to rotate its head nearly 280 degrees. By comparison, people can only turn their heads a mere 90 degrees!
