Kids Kabin!
The children of the Great Depression lived through a time of great trial and tribulation. But kids will be kids, and many children still found a way to have fun even though times were hard.
Our kids kabin will introduce the children of today to the fun and games of yesterday. Activities include:
- American Girl Activity Kits: These activity kits follow American Girl Kit Kittredge. Kit is a clever, resourceful girl facing the Great Depression with spirit and determination.
- Games: Hopscotch, jacks, red rover and other group games will happen at various times throughout the day. Introduce your children to the world before video games and how much fun they can have by interacting with other children in the great outdoors.
- Crafts: Try your hand at making a corn husk doll. Or test your skill at other hands-on crafts that use materials that would have been easy to find during the 1930s.
- Movies: Watch Shirley Temple and other kid stars of the 1930s.
|
Heritage Crafts:
Blacksmithing: Terry Fisher and friends will be demonstrating blacksmith techniques and tools from the 1930s in our crafts era. Stand and watch these master craftsmen and women at work while they demonstrate one of the most important trades that young men learned in the Civilian Conservation Corps. Items made by Terry and the other blacksmiths will be on sale in the General Store.
Hand Hewn Log Making: The master craftsmen and women of the National Park Service Historic Preservation Training Center will be on hand to demonstrate how the Civilian Conservation Corps used logs that they felled onsite to construct the many cabins in Prince William Forest Park.
On-site Cabin Restoration: Prince William Forest Park’s own maintenance staff will be restoring one of the 150 historic cabins built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the park during the 1930s. They will almost completely take apart a cabin to demonstrate how they restore these fragile buildings – you can even try a hand at restoration yourself!
