Natural History: Allen's Hummingbird
eats nectar and insects. It takes cover in trees and shrubs. It
nests above ground often in shaded areas. It breeds in woodlands
and dense scrub from mid-February to early August.
General Distribution: In the
Presidio, this species can be found in dune scrub areas, Eucalyptus,
Monterey Pine, and Monterey Cypress Forests and around ornamental
plants. It breeds within the Presidio.
Frequency: This species is common in the summer, spring, and fall.
Identifying Characteristics:
The males of the Allen's Hummingbird have green backs and orange-red
throats. The females have green backs with reddish sides and tail
bases.
