The Buffalo Soldiers Exhibit

Although the Buffalo Soldiers never served at Fort Point, this National Historic Site has a permanent exhibit of photographs and associated text on the history of African Americans in the Army. The exhibit focuses in particular on the Buffalo Soldier regiments. This exhibit is located on the second floor (this area is not wheelchair accessible).

Did You Know?

Albert Sidney Johnston

Colonel Albert Sidney Johnston, commander of the Pacific branch of the army, prepared the defenses of the San Francisco Bay and ordered the first garrison of Fort Point. Kentucky-born Johnston then resigned his commission to join the Confederate Army; he was killed at the battle of Shiloh in 1862.
