Park Wavelengths - November 2014

Friday, November 21, 2014

A new moon on Saturday, November 22, brings in the holiday week with very high tides measuring over 6 feet in the morning. The best beach walking will be after noon.

A moment of quiet in the landscape as tule elk end their breeding season and feathered migrants have moved south. A few young elephant seals are on park beaches with larger males anticipated sometime in December, along with the first southbound gray whales. As noted, mushrooms are early this year. Many species associated with pine and fir forests are out while none of the species associated with oaks have been noted.

West Marin School's annual Turkey Trot foot race takes place on Monday, November 24, with children jogging between Bear Valley [Trailhead] and Divide Meadow. Plan accordingly as the students will be running in small groups between 9:30 am and noon.

The Lighthouse Visitor Center will be open on Thanksgiving Day from 10 am to 2 pm, while the Bear Valley Visitor center will be open from 9 am to 2 pm for the holiday. Roads and trails are open with park staff on duty.

New artwork—black and white images of western landscapes—at the Bear Valley Visitor Center is from Eli Geller.

Subject: Brush Fire Near Point Reyes Hostel, Monday, November 17.

Last night at about 7 pm, strong winds along the coast brought down a power line onto the brushy hillside above the Point Reyes Hostel. The winds blew cross slope, pushing the fire downhill. Marin County Dispatch was notified and a strong county-wide response was started. In all, seven units from Marin County, the Inverness Park Volunteer Fire Department, and NPS Fire Fighters responded.

The visitors and staff at the Hostel and local residents were evacuated. Fire fighters oversaw the scene until PG&E could arrive and shut down the live power lines. Once the power was shut down, firefighters quickly put out the fire. Visitors and residents were allowed to return to their facilities by midnight and most units cleared the scene up by 3 am. Firefighters will remain on scene through Tuesday.

In all, about 1.6 acres of brush burned.

If you have any questions, please contact Jordan Reeser, Fire Management Officer.

Six-foot-plus mid-morning tides accompany the full moon this Thursday, November 6. Lots of moonlight will wash out the Taurid meteor shower. No worry, the Leonid meteor shower may be seen in the upcoming weeks, peaking on November 17.

Ladybugs, aka ladybird beetles, have been zipping around the Douglas fir trees in Bear Valley as they prepare to mass and migrate toward inland valleys where plentiful supplies of aphids may hold them through the winter. Some of these species also overwinter amongst oak leaf litter.

Bear Valley Visitor Center began winter hours this week closing at 4:30 pm each day; opening at 10 am on weekdays and 9 am weekends and federal Holidays. Bear Valley will be open on Veterans Day, Tuesday, November 11.

Brown Bag Lunch topic this week at 12:30 pm on Thursday, November 6, in the Red Barn at park headquarters is "Spotted Owls of West Marin". The program is free and open to the public.
