Beach Hazards Statement Issued for Point Reyes National Seashore for the Weekend of October 11 and 12, 2014

A big storm in the Gulf of Alaska is generating large waves that are headed toward the California coast. Initially, the swell period will increase to 18 to 20 seconds beginning tonight but swells will remain in the 3 to 5 foot range. On Saturday, the swell height will increase to 9 to 11 feet reaching their highest of 11 to 13 feet Saturday evening into Sunday. Swell period will be 17 to 19 seconds Saturday, becoming 16 to 17 seconds on Sunday. These large waves have the potential to cause sneaker waves and strong rip currents. All of these conditions could be life threatening.

Swimmers caught in rip currents should swim parallel to the coast to escape the rip current before trying to swim for shore. Swimmers should always swim near a lifeguard. Be sure to always have your eyes on the ocean.
