Abbotts Lagoon Coastal Dune Restoration Project: Recent Events and Updates

  • Programmatic Environmental Assessment: The Seashore will begin work on a programmatic Environmental Assessment for coastal dune restoration areas in other parts of the park. This document is scheduled for release in 2013. A letter is being sent to the public to increase awareness of these planning efforts and to allow for comments related to the scope of the planning effort. Comment period will end January 15, 2013.
  • Project Construction of Phase I of the Abbott's Lagoon Coastal Dune Restoration Project Completed in August 2011, with implementation of Phase II in fall 2011 and Phase III in 2012.
  • Dune Restoration Pilot Project: In mid-December 2009, the Seashore conducted a small pilot dune restoration project approximately 1 mile south of Abbotts Lagoon. The pilot project involved mechanical removal of European beachgrass (Ammophila arenaria) through excavation and burial and placement of a clean sand cap that is not contaminated with the highly viable rhizome fragments. The project essentially represented a pilot or initial phase designed to refine construction approaches and cost estimates for the larger project currently in development. It lasted approximately one week and provided valuable information that is being used to refine the construction approach for this project, scheduled to begin implementation in February 2011.
  • FONSI: The Finding of No Significant Impact that signaled completion of compliance requirements under the National Environmental Policy Act was signed in June 2009.
  • EA: The draft Environmental Assessment was released in winter 2009 for a 45-day public comment period, which closed March 20, 2009.
