Pacific Coast Science and Learning Center: Research Internship and Education Programs
PCSLC: Plover Interns

The Pacific Coast Science and Learning Center (PCSLC) actively recruits those who are interested and willing to support science, research, and science education at national park sites within the San Francisco Area Network.

This includes internship and volunteer opportunities at Eugene O'Neill National Historic Site, Fort Point National Historic Site, Golden Gate National Recreation Area, John Muir National Historic Site, Muir Woods National Monument, Pinnacles National Monument, Point Reyes National Seashore, and the Presidio of San Francisco.

What kinds of internships and volunteer opportunities are available?

 
PCSLC GPS Interns

Past interns and volunteers have assisted with biological inventories and monitoring (for example, butterflies, mushrooms, fish, rare plants, tule elk, seals), cultural resources projects, social science, and restoration. Other volunteers assist with science education programs either as a docent or as a docent coordinator. Some internships focus on the summer season (Biological Science Aids) while others are over the winter months (Resource Educator Volunteer).

Who may apply?

These positions are open to all levels of experience including graduate students, educators, community members, and high school students.

2009 Field Research Intern

One summer research intern is needed to help with field research on the population ecology of rare, coastal dune plants at Point Reyes National Seashore.

Pairs students with researchers to assist in fieldwork and learn scientific concepts and methodology.

2009 Science Communication Interns

The Pacific Coast Science and Learning Center is collaborating with the San Francisco Bay Area Network Inventory & Monitoring Program and Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary to host one or two science communication interns this summer. 

They will be working on a host of different projects:

  • Developing two-page Research Project Summaries of current science and monitoring in SFAN Parks;
  • Producing the annual 6-page "Parks for Science" newsletter;
  • Producing several 3-5 minute audio and video podcasts;
  • Developing an ocean interpretive program to be delivered at the Point Reyes Lighthouse;
  • Contributing to Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary ocean education curricula;
  • Documenting their experience on the intern blog.

Tule Elk  

Did You Know?
In the mid-1800s, the tule elk was hunted to the brink of extinction. The last surviving tule elk were discovered and protected in the southern San Joaquin Valley in 1874. In 1978, ten tule elk were reintroduced to Point Reyes, which now has one of California's largest populations, numbering ~500.
