DBOC SUP EIS Background Information: Archaeology of Ostrea lurida in Drakes Estero

The report Archaeology of Ostrea lurida in Drakes Estero, Point Reyes National Seashore, by Michael Konzak and Adrian Praetzellis, is cited in the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the Drakes Bay Oyster Company Special Use Permit (Draft EIS). This report contains confidential cultural resources location information. Cultural resources are nonrenewable, and their scientific, cultural and aesthetic values can be significantly impaired by disturbance. To deter vandalism, artifact hunting, and other activities that can damage cultural resources, the locations of cultural resources should be kept confidential. The legal authority to restrict cultural resources information is in 16 U.S.C. 470hh. The National Park Service has reviewed the documents and has redacted confidential site information to allow for public release.

Three documents are included in this release: the March 2011 draft version (359 KB PDF), the July 2011 final version (365 KB PDF), and the October 2011 addendum (126 KB PDF). There are two author's corrections to the July 2011 final version: Page 16: Table 3 (20 KB PDF) and Page 17 (29 KB PDF).

The March 2011 draft version is cited in the Draft EIS and is the version that was sent out for peer review following NPS peer review standards. The July 2011 version incorporates peer review comments, and was accepted as final consistent with NPS peer review standards. In order to assure that the public has the opportunity to review the version cited in the Draft EIS, and the peer-reviewed final, both versions are available for public review.

Following completion of the report, the authors conducted additional sampling of shell fragments from site CA-MRN-296. The information from this additional sampling is presented as an addendum to the original report and dated October 2011. The addendum has been peer reviewed following NPS peer review standards. The full document, including the July 2011 report and October 2011 addendum will be considered in the development of the Final EIS.
