Description

Shiloh is pleased to announce a special ranger-led hike entitled “Death of a Division” on Saturday, May 18.

Join Ranger Charles Spearman as he hikes portions of General Prentiss’ battlelines and discusses the severe losses Confederates suffered in attacking this green division. Ranger Spearman will cover units such as the 1st Louisiana Infantry and the death of Confederate General Adley Gladden.

Union General Benjamin Prentiss, a veteran of the Mexican War, volunteered for service in the Civil War and was commissioned a brigadier general of volunteers on May 17, 1861. On March 26, 1862, Prentiss was assigned to command unattached troops at Pittsburg Landing which would be brigaded and formed into the Sixth Division.

The newly formed division was camped along the Eastern Corinth Road near the front of the Union army. On the morning of April 6, 1862, Prentiss’ men would be overwhelmed and outflanked by the attacking Confederates. By the end of the day many of its men, including Prentiss himself had been captured or killed.

The hike will take place from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm and participants will meet at Tour Stop # 9 Peabody’s Headquarters (Invasion of the Union Camps). The distance of the hike is a little more than two-miles miles over moderate terrain. Participants should wear clothing and footwear appropriate for the weather. Insect repellent, sunscreen, and water is recommended. Pre-registration is required to participate in the hike. Please call the park visitor center at 731-689-5696 to register.
