News Release Date: July 30, 2013

Fredonia, AZ – The August evening bat program at Pipe Spring National Monument will be Friday, August 9 from 7-9 pm AZ (8-10 UT). You’re invited to join us for a close up look at one of the most mysterious creatures of the night.

As part of an annual monitoring program, biologists and rangers set up nets over the ponds at Pipe Spring to catch bats as they hunt and drink.

Removing a squirming, biting bat from a net takes a bit of finesse; but armed with gloves, patience, and rabies shots, the bats are removed unharmed. They are then identified and checked for reproductive status and overall health. Visitors are then allowed a close up view.

So join us on August 9 at 7:00 pm AZ (8:00 UT). Bring a lawn chair, flashlight, bug spray, and water to drink. Come out early (6:00 pm AZ, 7:00 pm UT) and visit the Pipe Spring National Monument Visitor Center and Museum.

Regular entrance fees will apply - $5.00 per person 16 and older (younger are free). Interagency Annual, Senior, and Access passes are accepted and sold at Pipe Spring. Pipe Spring National Monument is 15 miles west of Fredonia, AZ on AZ 389, or 45 miles east of Hurricane, UT on UT 59 and AZ 389.
