Joint News Release
The first meeting will be held Tuesday, April 3, at 7 p.m. at the Alger County Historical Society on 1496 Washington Street in Munising. This meeting will be devoted to stimulating a more vibrant arts, crafts and cultural events economy in Munising and greater Alger County.
The second meeting will be held Tuesday, April 10, at 7 p.m. at the Mather Auditorium at 411 Elm Avenue in Munising. This meeting will be devoted to working together to identify and address a variety of aesthetic issues in Munising and greater Alger County.
Both meetings are open to agencies, organizations and individuals interested in working together on these initiatives.
“We heard two very powerful messages at this workshop” said Munising City Manager Doug Bovin. “One, that the economic vitality of gateway communities depends in very large part on how the approaches to and the downtown areas appear to visitors. Second, we learned that displaying and marketing the talents of local artisans and hosting interesting cultural events has been vital to the success of many other gateway communities.”
“I believe we have a wonderful opportunity to make progress on both of these important initiatives,” said Bob Eslinger, Executive Director of the Munising Area Partnership for Economic Development. “This area is blessed with spectacular scenery, natural resources and recreational opportunities. If we can work together as a community to make the gateway areas known as attractive, interesting and vibrant destinations, it will really help our economy.”
“There is so much energy and talent in this community,” added Rochelle Cotey, Director of ALTRAN. “A lot of people I talk to are interesting in being a part of these initiatives, and we encourage everyone to come to one or both of these meetings. This is our community and it takes collective leadership to move us forward in positive directions.”
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore superintendent Jim Northup said, “I think it is fantastic that we are working together to discuss and address these issues and I hope there will be a strong turnout at both meetings. We need everyone’s ideas and contributions to make this a success.”
