Quarriers & Carvers: Through the YearsThe tradition of quarrying pipestone has existed at Pipestone National Monument for thousands of years. The tradition continues today with 56 active quarries. Cultural demonstrators carve the red pipestone to educate visitors.

Pipestone National Monument was the first National Park Service area in Minnesota designated by Congress and signed into existence by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt on August 25, 1937.
