Pipestone National Monument Celebrates Founder's Day

Pipestone, MN: Superintendent Glen Livermont announced today PipestoneNational Monument will celebrate Founder's Day Tuesday, August 25, 2015, tocommemorate the establishment of both the National Park Service and PipestoneNational Monument.

Congress established the National Park Service on August 25, 1916,with thirty-five national parks and monuments administered under the Departmentof Interior. This year the National Park Service is celebrating its 99th birthday. Pipestone National Monument was added to the system by Congress on August 25,1937 and celebrates 78years of being a part of the National Park Service. Today, 407 units make up theNational Park System.

All National Park Service sites, including Pipestone NationalMonument, will offer free entrance on Tuesday, August 25th, for theNational Park Services 99th birthday.

The PipestoneIndian Shrine Association will provide complimentary refreshments to visitorsat the Pipestone National Monument Visitor Center between 11 am and 2 pm. Thevisitor center is open from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Visitors will have the opportunity to go on a guided tour of the Circle Trail with oneof the monuments park rangers to learn about our history, quarrying, tall grassprairie, and much more!

To promote the Monument's Junior Ranger program there will be Junior Rangeractivities ongoing all day. The Monument offers youth the opportunity to jointhe National Park Service Family as Junior Rangers. During their park visit,interested youth complete activities focusing on the natural and culturalresources of the Monument. They will receive an official Junior Rangerbadge and Junior Ranger certificate. In addition, all youth receiving aJunior Ranger badge will be eligible to enter a raffle to win a PipestoneNational Monument Annual Pass. The Pass will admit the winning youth and upto four adults for one full year.
