The observation deck gallery captures the panoramic view of western Lake Erie that one would see from atop the memorial column. From this height of 352 feet Middle Bass Island, North Bass Island, Johnson's Island, Kelley's Island, Pelee Island in Canada, and the Ohio mainland of Catawba Point and Marblehead Peninsula are visible. On a clear day it is possible to see as far as Detroit, Toledo and Cleveland.

To commemorate the Bicentennial of the war, the American Society of Marine Artists has released a seven-part video, featuring the finest collection of art created over the last two hundred years to illustrate this vital era. The film is offered free to the public as an educational and entertainment documentary.

With the Amherstburg blockade by Oliver Hazard Perry, British commander Robert Barclay's supply line was cut. He needed food and equipment for his new flag ship the Detroit. By September 9, 1813 he was down to a day’s ration. So he removed the cannons from Fort Malden and placed them on the Detroit.
