Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial
Established to honor those who fought in the Battle of Lake Erie, during the war of 1812, but in equal part it is here to celebrate the long-lasting peace between Britain, Canada and the U.S. Situated 5 miles from the longest undefended border in the world. Monument Construction began in October 1912, opened to the public on June 13 1915, and became a National Park Service Memorial in 1936.

The Battle of Lake Erie
At dawn on the morning of September 10, 1813, a lookout spotted six vessels to the northwest past rattlesnake island. Immediately Master Commandant Oliver Hazard Perry made preparations to sail forth to engage the British. Just before the engagement opened Perry hoisted his battle flag inscribed "DONT GIVE UP THE SHIP".

Monument Open for the 2008 Season
Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial is now open for the 2008 season.
The observation deck atop the Monument column will be open for the 2008 summer season. Access to a few small areas may be limited, from time to time, as we prepare for major repairs during the 2009 summer season.

Lake Erie Islands
The observation gallery located 317 feet above lake Erie at Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial offers a panoramic view of western Lake Erie. South Bass Island on which the monument stands, is the second largest of the American islands. South Bass, commonly referred to as Put-in-Bay, has a permanent population of approximately 400 people, although this swells to about 1299 in the summer. In addition to the numerous shops downtown, other points of interest are: Heineman's Winery, Perry's and Crystal Caves, Lake Erie Historical Society Museum, Stone Hedge Museum and South Bass State Park, site of the once famous Victory Hotel.

Climate
Summer temperatures range from 60F to 85F with winter temperatures ranging from 15F to 40F. Spring and fall can be quite windy. The chance of seeing a clear sunny day in the summer is 65% and 33% in the winter. Weather can change quickly on Lake Erie, so be prepared with the proper clothing.

Did You Know?
With the Amherstburg blockade by Oliver Hazard Perry, British commander Robert Barclay's supply line was cut. He needed food and equipment for his new flag ship the Detroit. By September 9, 1813 he was down to a day’s ration. So he removed the cannons from Fort Malden and placed them on the Detroit.
