Trail Closures due to trail restoration project
Per Superintendent's Order: T36 CFR 1.5(f), Rinconada Canyon and other side trails are closed until further notice due to an extensive trail restoration project. Inquire at visitor center for open petroglyph viewing trails. Thank you.
The Mata Ortiz pottery sale, sponsored by Western National Parks Association, will be held at the Visitor Center on Saturday, September 7, 2013 from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm and on Sunday, September 8, 2013 from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. Hundreds of Mata Ortiz pots will be available and potters will be present to demonstrate their craft. A selection of Zapotec weavings from Teotitlan in Mexico, made with intricate designs and vibrant colors, and colorful wood painted animal figurines will also be available to purchase.
The story of the creation of this beautiful pottery began with a young man, Juan Quezada, upon his seeing the pottery created at the nearby prehistoric site of Casas Grandes or Paquime. His vision has led to the improvement of the lives of the many people of the village of Mata Ortiz in Chihuahua.
