Research Resources

Petersburg National Battlefield

Petersburg National Battlefield contains numerous research materials as well as access to several databases for genealogical research. Items include: Historical Documents, photographs, diaries, letters and other materials. These materials, while not available for outside loan, can be researched at the battlefield once our research room is completed and open to the public. Our holdings are currently being digitized and cataloged. Requests for copies of materials already digitized can be submitted through our Education Specialist. Please allow ample time for materials to be processed.

When making genealogical requests, please have as much information as possible. The more information you can provide, the more likely we are to be able to fill your request.

Blandford Church and Cemetery, 1865.

Those who died on the battlefields around Petersburg were left where they were originally buried until after the Civil War. From 1866-69 most Union dead were buried at Poplar Grove National Cemetery while thousands of Confederate dead were buried at the historic Blandford Cemetery. (Petersburg NB)
