Athletic and General Events

A permit is required for all athletic events, including 5K and 10K races, walkathons, track meets, etc., and should be requested at least 30 days in advance. Please complete the Special Use Application at the link below and return it to:

Preapproved 5K routes from the Eastern Front Visitor Center parking lot and Mahone Avenue parking lot. (Participants that wish to use the Mahone Parking Lot must have a pass or approval to enter Fort Lee Army Base.)

The Crater in Petersburg

The 4th Division of the Union 9th Corps lost 209 men killed and wounded at the Battle of the Crater. Poplar Grove National Cemetery is the resting spot for 331 United States Colored Troops. Most of these men are unidentified burials from the Crater battlefield. (Petersburg Nat'l Battlefield)
