Teacher Workshop-The Civil War in the Ozarks
|
Tuesday, August 2, 2011 8:30am - 4:00pm This is a free teacher workshop that will focus on "storytelling" as a tool for engaging students in local and regional history. The content will emphasize the impact of the Civil War on the people of the Ozark border regions and include a tour of the Pea Ridge battlefield and a presentation about life on the Arkansas Ozark homefront, as recounted in letters, interviews, memoirs, and stories. Teachers will begin to formulate unit lesson plans that will use their own as well as students' skills and interests to interpret information about the impact of the war and related events in their own communities. These lesson plans will enrich student storytelling through visual arts, music, productions in various digital media, models, theatrical presentations, oral and written presentations, and other devices. The teachers will explore ways of identifying and researching local stories to be told, and will design their units to conform to district and state curricular requirements. Transportation will be provided on a mini-coach from the community college to the park and back. Lunch will also be provided. Presenters: Charley Sandage, Writer, Arkansas Stories Project Susan Young, Outreach Coordinator, Shiloh Museum of Ozark History Troy Banzhaf, Park Ranger, Pea Ridge National Military Park

Did You Know?
The site of Leetown was a thriving community before the Battle of Pea Ridge. Leetown’s buildings were used as hospitals for the wounded on both sides. After the battle, the buildings were in such disrepair that only a handful of people returned to Leetown.
