Petrified Forest National Park Artist in Residence Program Lecture Series - July 2008

Petrified Forest, AZ – The public is cordially invited to attend an artist lecture and slide show with American painter Joella Jean Mahoney. The artist will discuss her artwork, explain how her various images are developed and the process in which she creates her work. Joella Jean Mahoney is the third of 12 artists this season in the Petrified Forest’s Artist-in-Residence program. She will be at the park gathering inspiration derived from this unique landscape that the natural world has to offer while working on her next artworks.

Mahoney is best known for her large landscapes of the Colorado Plateau, which express her relationships to the landforms of the southwest. "I paint every subject matter; I have just become known for the big landscape," she explains. Her subject matter combines the geological, emotional, and the spiritual aspects of the land with her daily interactions with place. Mahoney has been painting for five decades and exhibits her work nationwide as well as internationally. She has received numerous artist awards and prestigious invitations worldwide. Mahoney also has a history of art instruction and conducts many workshops. She has become known as one of Arizona’s most loved painters.

The presentation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 28 and will be held at the Painted Desert Visitor Center Auditorium in Petrified Forest National Park. The visitor center is located at Exit 311 on Interstate Highway 40. This presentation is open to the public and admission is free.

The Petrified Forest National Park Artist-in-Residence Program was established to bring park visitors and artists together to foster understanding and appreciation of the natural and cultural resources of the park and the Colorado Plateau.
